Truth up front but gently? or Lied to spare your feelings?
Honesty is the way to go. I'd hate to be lied to. I'd rather someone tell me something horrible but true than lied to about it. But don't confuse being honest with being a dick. People seem to confuse them. "I was just being honest" No, you were being a complete Asshole McDouchebag.
