Day 16

My Life Soundtrack
These songs relate to events in my life and my personal philosophies. 15 songs, go!

1) "Story of My Life" by Social Distortion

Life goes by so fast
You only wanna do what you think is right
Close your eyes and it's passed
Story of My Life

And that is the story of my life. I'm only 18 but I feel like it was just yesterday when I was 4, chillin at home with my Grandma because I didn't go to pre-school. When I graduated high school it hit me in the face that I'm not a kid anymore. I'm not crying, "OH MY GOD I'M OLD!" It's more of, "crap dude where'd the time go? Yesterday I was eating Fruit by the Foot I pulled out of a brown paper bag for snacktime. Now today I'm eating a Fruit by the Foot in my college library waiting for class to start." As I bullet down the highway of life, I am gonna do what I think is right. Because before I know it, the chances will I look forward to will all be looked back on. And I don't want any regrets.

2) "Easy Life" by Goober Patrol

Let's make the most of the time and the place
Let's get together explore our space
Too much bureaucracy not enough TV
Do you think this could be right?

Turn up the music and turn down the phone and
Let's pretend that we're not at home
You look so uptight
How do I sleep at night?
Very well thank you good night

Turn up the music and turn down the phone now
Let's all pretend that we're not at home now
I'm just trying to live the easy life I don't understand you being so uptight

Fun's not pointless you're exploring for a reason
Everybody needs a reason to explore their dreams
Too much of everything not enough nothing
Do you think this could be right?

I'm just trying to live the easy life
Don't understand why you're so uptight
Too much worrying and not enough having fun
Do you think this could be right?

If I had to choose one song to represent me, I think this would be it. It shows my attitude on life and my personality in general.

3) "I'm Not A Punk" by The Descendents

I'm not a punk, how can I be?
Show me a way to conformity
Try to be different but it's always the same
End up playin someone else's game

I am not a punk and don't consider myself one (contrary to popular belief). I don't believe in "not conforming". I always here from hippies "BREAK THE NORMS! DON'T CONFORM!" By not conforming, you're conforming to counter-culture. Good job you just contradicted yourself. And this goes into "being free". My one hippy friend told me, something on the lines of, "Be free. Don't follow the society's norms". And I've heard that from a couple people. Following norms has nothing to do with being free. You're free when you could choose for yourself, not caring if it's a norm or not.

4) "What I Got" by Sublime

Life is too short so love the one you got
Cause you might get run over or you might get shot

True words. I love my life, when it's awesome, and even when it sucks. Don't take your life for granted.

5) "Song #1" by Fugazi

Life is what you want it to be so
Don't get tangled in trying to be free and
Don't care what the other people say

[see track 3]

6) "Angel and a Devil" by The Gadjits

So I'm gonna do my best
To kill em with kindness
So I can grow old to be good

People say spread the love but all people do is spread hate. I'm gonna live my life tryin to be the best person I could be.

7) "Start Today" by Gorilla Biscuits

PROCRASTINATE!
IT COULD WAIT!
I PUT IT OFF!

I call this my theme song. I've always been like this but it really showed (for whatever reason) now in college.

8) "Know It All" by Lagwagon

It's supposed to serve as a means to expose new bands
Without prejudice, but it makes no sense
Safe harbor for the underground
'Til the alternative becomes the popular sound
The bands are good 'til they make enough cash
To eat food and get a pad
Then they're sold out and their music is cliché
Because talent's exclusive to bands without pay

This was me in high school. I was the douche bag who always put other people's music down for being "too corporate" and "sell outs". "I can't believe they went on MTV! What a bunch of sell outs!" I realize know how ridiculous that is. I still think most bands are in it for the fame and fortune and not for the music. But it's not bad (at all) to make money off of YOUR work. If you're that good, you deserve to be rewarded. These bands are musicians. They make a living from making music. I don't expect them to get a job at a McDonald's to put food on their plates. They could do that with their music.

9) "Out of Step" by Minor Threat

Don't smoke!
Don't drink!
Don't fuck!
At least I can fucking think!

Goin into high school I didn't wanna party like my peers. I didn't wanna brag about how I couldn't remember how much fun I had the other night. That actually sounds pretty friggin ironic to me. I didn't care how high someone got or how drunk or how many chicks Captain Douche Bag banged the other night. I found Minor Threat and thought, "this is me". That was my mentality at the time. I still find it annoying when people brag about that stuff. But I've cooled down from Mr. Elite about the subject. [read Day 3]

10) "I'm Like Yeah but She's All No" by Mr. T Experience

The title of the song says it all. This was basically the story of my life up until I met this gnarly chick. Which leads up to the next song.

11) "All The Small Things" by Blink 182

Keep your head still
I'll be your thrill
The night will go on
My little windmill

She's the best any man could ask for. And we'll play this song every Friday.

12) "Lazy" by NoFX

I wish I could go, so far away
Where time moves too slow, day after day
I'll wait and I'll sit and wait and watch the clouds as they go by
I have a sensation where laziness
Procrastination is what I do best

Story of my friggin life right there!

13) "Trenchtown Rock" by Bob Marley

One good thing about music
Is when it hits ya
Ya feel no pain

My life revolves around music. I play guitar, bass, and drums. I'm in bands. I'm constantly listening to music. When I'm down or worried about something, music is my medicine. It washes me from worry. Music is the reason I found that special someone. Music is what gives me most of my inspiration. I got my most of my philosophies and views on life from music. Without music I'd be a completely different person.

14) "Time Tough" by Toots and the Maytals

Can't blame the minister
and you can't blame the preacher
and you can't blame your brother
and you cannot blame your sister
Can't blame your friends
Cause today is judgement day
And that's why everyone have to pray

The narrator of song says how it's hard for him to live. Money is tight, he can't pay rent. I relate to this song in that it's a hard time for me right now. Money is tight. My house is for foreclosure. My parents are having trouble gettin a job. It's tough man. Time tough. You sings the lines above and those are true words. You can't blame people for stuff like that. Shit happens.

15) "Along the Way" by Bad Religion

Now we grow, as we show, that the morals we must know
Will be shapen and mistaken by the falls along the way
But don't forget, don't regret, to find love and happiness
Unless you're willing to be strong, when they're gone along the way

I think this song is for everyone. The whole song is about life in general. I'll see you all along the way.

  1. You know I read the "Captain Douchebag" part and thought, "Wait is he talking about Eli? He can't be that doesn't make sense..."

I've been programmed. Douchebag = Eli. It's so sad.
